In this piece, the OTM team explores the role of organization design within a bureaucracy. The need for organization design in bureaucracies is more important now than ever. As an organization increases in scale, so does its bureaucracy to adapt to increasing managerial demands. A recent HBR study reveals that employees in larger organizations (5,000+ employees) have at least six layers of management above them. Although the “agile” movement has been increasing momentum for organization design, this organizational clutter provides a different reality.
So what is the value of organization design for expanding bureaucracies?
This organizational clutter is likely to prevail unless we acknowledge that this is the reality, instead of believing the “Emperor’s New Clothes” of the agile world. If you are prepared to see that the emperor is, in fact, naked, then strive to understand the true impact of your design on your customer, your people and of course, your performance.
